Electric fireplaces are the furnaces of modern times. With the flip of a switch, they are on and heating up your home. No need for matches, wood, or even cleaning out the chimney. These look like conventional masonry fireplaces but they are so much easier to install, use, and clean.

If you have a small apartment, you can get a corner unit that will heat your place but won't take up much room.

- Your washing machine and refrigerator are some of the most important electrical supplies in your house and they should have an Energy Star rating. Yes, these are a little more expensive to begin with, but over time you will see a great deal of savings on your utility bill.
- Replace incandescent bulbs with fluorescent ones. They burn at a much lower rate of heat and last a lot longer. Not only that, but they cost about the same. Using fluorescent bulbs is a no brainer!
