Pros and Cons of Electric Fireplaces

Electric fireplaces are the furnaces of modern times. With the flip of a switch, they are on and heating up your home. No need for matches, wood, or even cleaning out the chimney. All you need for installation are an electric fireplace kit, a clean rag, glass cleaner, a drill, and access to an electrical outlet. It does not get more convenient than this! These look like conventional masonry fireplaces but they are so much easier to install, use, and clean.

Everything seems just dandy, right? Well, it is one of the great modern conveniences but it does have a couple of drawbacks. One is that it is a secondary source of heat. While a lot of electric fireplaces can heat a whole room or more, they imitate space heaters. The second disadvantage is the electric bill. If your electricity is expensive (and whose isn't?) then you may incur a hefty bill for this usage. If you live in a place that has heavy tree growth, a standard fireplace would be more of a benefit financially.
Electric fireplaces not only have the capability of providing labor free heat but they can be decorative as well. There many different sizes to suit all space availability and interior design. If you have a small apartment, you can get a corner unit that will heat your place but won't take up much room.

How to Reduce Your Energy Bill

The energy bill we receive in the mail monthly is one of the most necessary evil's we have to incur. We hate them, yet we cannot avoid them because electric companies can shut off our power in a New York second for unpaid bills. That is the bad news. The good news is there are a few ways we can lower the cost of energy:

  1. Reduce limescale buildup. This is a sign of hard water clogging the pipes thus increases the bills for heating. It not only forces the heating system to work harder for hot water but it can also affect your pipes, dishwashers, and washing machines. A water treatment is in order if limescale becomes a problem in your home.
  2. Your washing machine and refrigerator are some of the most important electrical supplies in your house and they should have an Energy Star rating. Yes, these are a little more expensive to begin with, but over time you will see a great deal of savings on your utility bill.
  3. Replace incandescent bulbs with fluorescent ones. They burn at a much lower rate of heat and last a lot longer. Not only that, but they cost about the same. Using fluorescent bulbs is a no brainer!
